The enterprising explorer. The colonial crusader. The emboldened subject who deems the edge of their dominion as the edge of the world. This is the figure of the frontierist. To them, whatever remains beyond is terra nullius - a nobody’s land that is ripe for the picking, extracting, etc.
Whichever combination of dominatory processes the subject chooses to employ, they do so in the name of the Good. Whether that name is Lord, Queen, Chosen People, or as in this case - Sustainable Future, it is only the sole frontierist, the singular white man - of which there exist countless facsimiles, through whom the Good can be realised.
Specifically, the project centers around the CEO of a deep-sea mining company, and an architect building a floating city; two figures who claim that their work will protect the planet from climate catastrophe.
The project investigates the threat posed by these men and their fictions of salvation. It is unlikely that resource extraction can occur within ethical ecological and social constraints; but through moral alibis and sweet nothings the frontierists will sustain.
