A methodology that performs an alternative reading of western media and state response. This project developed from a discomfort around the western state and media response to the on-going situation in Hong Kong around human rights, freedom of speech, and false acts of post-colonial reconciliation.
Reading the margins activates and reveals their latent forces of power. The seemingly innocuous peripheral elements of digital media are sites in need of interrogation. By analysing elements such as headlines, imagery, source codes, adverts/pop-ups, and even data protection dialogue, underlying agendas, biases, and speculations become exposed. Mediating between these surface and subterranean elements acts as a metaphor for how we can navigate narratives of migration, cultural history, and conflicted identity.
